Justice Antonio Cassese (1937 - 2011)

ALMA and its members would like to express their sorrow and sympathy over the passing of Justice Prof. Antonio Cassese on October 21, 2011.
In recent decades, Justice Cassese has contributed greatly to developments in public international law and especially with regard to international humanitarian law (IHL) and international criminal law (ICL).
Between 1993 and 1997 Cassese served as the first President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), after which he continued to serve as a tribunal justice until 2000. Cassese served also as the first President of the Special Tribunal of Lebanon since March 2009 and until October 2011 when he had to resign his position due to health problems.
Prof. Cassese has published many articles and book on international law and his academic, judicial and moral influence will remain for many years.
